Light Verb Constructions and Structural Ambiguity

چکیده

Previous analyses of (Korean) Light Verb Constructions (LVCs) have failed to provide objective criteria for defining LVCs. The verb hais inconsistently regarded as a Light Verb (LV) or as a "heavy verb" depending on its environment. In the face of this problem, I argue, firstly, that all ha-sentences should be analyzed as LVCs when the potential Verbal Noun (VN) has at least one of the verbally case-marked phrases as its argument. Secondly, LVCs (neither LVs nor VNs) are classified into two groups based on their structural differences. Thirdly, LVC sentences in general are ambiguous between the structures of these two groups. Many sentences, however, are disambiguated because the VN in each structure has its own special properties. In this approach, the differences of the behavior of the VN in (LVC) ha-sentences are attributed to their structural differences rather than to "spuriously" multiplied lexical items.

The Truth-Conditional Treatment of Ambiguity and Chinese Serial Verb Constructions

According to Li & Thompson (1981), Chinese serial verb constructions consisting of two verb phrases denoting two separate events can be classified into those having alternating, consecutive, purpose or circumstance relations. These classifications may overlap and a serial verb construction may be ambiguous between different interpretations. It has been argued in a recent study (Chan 1996) that ...

The difference between "giving a rose" and "giving a kiss": Sustained neural activity to the light verb construction.

We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms associated with processing light verb constructions such as "give a kiss". These constructions consist of a semantically underspecified light verb ("give") and an event nominal that contributes most of the meaning and also activates an argument structure of its own ("kiss"). This creates a mismatch between the ...

Acquisition of lightverbhood: evidence from Cypriot Greek

This experiment investigates the acquisition of (true) light verb constructions (in the sense of Kearns 1988/2002) as well as other constructions that involve a light verb in Cypriot Greek. Focusing on the acquisition of the light verb kamno ‘do/make’, this study aims to identify (i) whether light verb constructions are more frequent in Cypriot Greek than in Standard Modern Greek, (ii) what the...

Dependency Parsing for Identifying Hungarian Light Verb Constructions

Light verb constructions (LVCs) are verb and noun combinations in which the verb has lost its meaning to some degree and the noun is used in one of its original senses. They often share their syntactic pattern with other constructions (e.g. verbobject pairs) thus LVC detection can be viewed as classifying certain syntactic patterns as light verb constructions or not. In this paper, we explore a...

Comprehensive and Consistent PropBank Light Verb Annotation
